Interseting related anecdote from a blog post by Karen Coyle:

"This person told me that all access to one of the UC campuses had been cut off recently for a few days because it was discovered that someone was systematically downloading entire journal runs. When they found the student it turned out that it was a foreign graduate student who would soon be returning home. Knowing that leaving the UC system would mean losing access to the journals he would need to continue his research, he was making himself a copy to take home."

Hello Tim,
Our University IT manages the underlying password/username authentication. The Library can use either CAS or LDAP to authenticate our patrons against their University password/username. Currently there is no policy to require password changes periodically - this probably would be a good thing to do, although a bit annoying from a user perspective. Thanks for the comments.

Just wondering what the underlying password/username authentication was? Something homegrown or LDAP based? Our LDAP passwords expire after 120 days so any stolen/phished password only has 4 month self life. Not the best thing to rely on but I try to tell myself that it is.
